Green-Lipped Mussel Powder vs Green-Lipped Mussel Oil: What's the Difference?
Green-lipped mussel has become one of the most popular natural ingredients for supporting joint health in dogs.
But there's something many dog owners don't realise:
Green-lipped mussel powder and green-lipped mussel oil are not the same thing.
They both come from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), but the way the mussel is processed determines what your dog actually receives.
And if you're choosing a green-lipped mussel supplement for your dog, that difference matters.

What is Green Lipped Mussel?
New Zealand green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a unique marine ingredient that naturally contains a wide range of nutrients and bioactive compounds.
These include:
-
Marine Omega-3 fatty acids
-
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including chondroitin sulphates
-
Amino acids
-
Proteins
-
Vitamins
-
Minerals
-
Other naturally occurring marine compounds
Research into green lipped mussel has investigated its potential role in supporting joint health, and clinical studies have reported improvements in measures such as pain, arthritis scores and mobility in some dogs.
But here's where it gets interesting.
But the interesting thing is that you don't get all of the nutritional benefits if you buy a green lipped mussel oil.
Green Lipped Mussel Powder: The Whole Mussel
Green-lipped mussel powder is produced from the mussel itself, which means it can retain a much broader spectrum of the nutrients naturally present in the whole mussel.
Think of it as the difference between eating the whole food and extracting just one part of it.
The powder can contain:
Omega-3 fatty acids
Including EPA, DHA and the distinctive marine fatty acid ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid).
Glycosaminoglycans
Including chondroitin sulphates, which are important components of cartilage and connective tissue.
Amino acids and proteins
The mussel naturally provides a range of amino acids and protein components known to help joint health.
Vitamins and minerals
Including nutrients such as zinc, copper and manganese.
Other naturally occurring mussel compounds
The whole mussel contains a complex mixture of marine nutrients, all of which, except Omega 3, are removed from an oil.
So what is Green Lipped Mussel Oil?
Green-lipped mussel oil is a lipid extract.
Instead of retaining the whole mussel, the oil extraction process is designed to concentrate the lipid soluble fraction.
That can be useful because the lipid fraction contains important marine fatty acids and other lipid compounds.
In fact, lipid extracts of green lipped mussel have also been studied for joint health, and there is evidence that both lipid extracts and whole mussel preparations can have beneficial effects.
But Green Lipped Mussel powder and Green Lipped Mussel Oil do not do the same thing.
An oil is not simply a more concentrated version of the whole mussel.
It is a different fraction of the mussel.
And when you extract the oil, you don't retain everything that was present in the original whole mussel.
What gets lost when you only take the oil?
If you take a whole green lipped mussel and separate out its oil, you're concentrating the lipid portion.
But the other naturally occurring components of the mussel aren't concentrated into the oil.
That means the oil does not provide the same nutritional profile as whole green lipped mussel powder.
It won't provide the same combination of:
Glycosaminoglycans + proteins + amino acids + minerals + vitamins + marine lipids.
Instead, you're left with only the Omega 3’s and none of the other key nutritional compounds.
But isn't Omega-3 the important part?
Omega-3 is certainly an important component of green lipped mussel.
But it isn't the only interesting component.
One of the reasons green lipped mussel has attracted so much attention is that it is a naturally complex ingredient.
Research describes green lipped mussel as containing glycosaminoglycans, Omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
So reducing green lipped mussel to simply its oil content misses part of what makes the ingredient unique.
Green lipped mussel is more than its Omega-3.
That's why we don't see green lipped mussel powder and green lipped mussel oil as interchangeable.
Powder vs Oil: What's actually different?
| Green-Lipped Mussel Powder | Green-Lipped Mussel Oil | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Whole mussel | Lipid fraction of mussel |
| Marine Omega-3s | ✓ | ✓ |
| EPA & DHA | ✓ | ✓ |
| ETA | ✓ | ✓ |
| Glycosaminoglycans | ✓ | Not retained as a whole-mussel component |
| Chondroitin sulphates | ✓ | Not the same whole-mussel profile |
| Proteins & amino acids | ✓ | ✗ |
| Minerals | ✓ | ✗ |
| Vitamins | ✓ | ✗ |
| Broad whole-mussel nutrition | ✓ | ✗ |
| Concentrated lipid fraction | Less concentrated | ✓ |
The important point isn't that one form is universally "good" and the other "bad".
It's that they provide different things.
Why we choose Green Lipped Mussel Powder
At Riaflex, we want our customers to understand exactly what they're feeding their dogs.
We use green lipped mussel powder because we want to provide the broader nutritional profile of the whole mussel, rather than extracting only its oil.
We don't want to reduce this remarkable ingredient to one fraction.
We want the Omega-3s.
We want the naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans.
We want the amino acids and proteins.
We want the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.
And we want the complex combination of compounds that naturally exists within the whole mussel.
That's what makes green lipped mussel so interesting.
So, which should you choose?
It depends on what you're looking for.
If you're specifically looking for an Omega 3 supplement then green lipped mussel oil provides that lipid fraction.
But if you're looking for the broader nutritional benefits of the whole green lipped mussel, for joint support, powder provides something that an oil alone cannot replicate.
Green lipped mussel powder and green lipped mussel oil may come from the same remarkable marine ingredient, but they are not the same product, and they do not provide the same nutritional profile.
At Riaflex, we believe the whole ingredient matters.
We believe in using ingredients for what makes them valuable in the first place and that's why we choose to formulate our products with Green Lipped Mussel powder.
